The Value of a Good Recruiter

Dear Job Seekers,

I understand the market is tough right now… I mean really tough. But I want you to know that it’s not you – the truth is finding a job on your own has just gotten much harder.

Jay Richie*, estimates he sent out about 80 job applications since he was made redundant from his marketing job in 2023.

He tried everything from making some pretty cool presentations using Canva, getting to the interviews on time, putting on his best shirt, and extensively researching the company to the point where he remembered their mission statement.

And yet it yielded nothing.

It wasn’t until he reached out to a recruiter who supported him in his journey.

No, this isn’t another post about how great all recruiters are because I completely understand the reputation we’ve gained because of those who’ve ghosted you, lied to you, and even misrepresented you.

This is a post about the select few who are doing wonders for people’s lives – and yes, some of them work here.

The truth is, working with a recruiter – a good one at that – goes a long way.

Jay was able to work with someone who knew the industry much better than he did. The recruiter had intel that explained why he may not have gotten the jobs he interviewed for.

Being a good recruiter means knowing the market inside and out. There’s nothing that goes on in your industry that a good recruiter doesn't keep tabs on. It also means they’re more than just career matchmakers but consultants.

Together with the recruiter, they worked on understanding his values, passion, and purpose, reworking his resume, and getting interview prep advice.

After a few more interviews, and a few rejections (because working with a recruiter doesn’t mean a job will come in an instant) he landed his dream opportunity.

I’m not saying you can’t get a role without a recruiter, but why not work with a market specialist who studies the industry day in and day out and makes life somewhat easier? Job searching has now become a full-time job when it shouldn’t be - it’s a recruiter's job to take that stress of you.
